If you came to this site looking for money, you already know: it’s tough to be a fundraiser. Susan Simons is one of those rare women who has spent her life boldly asking people to invest their money in a variety of causes, from the building of a modern hospice (http://www.alivehospice.org/locations-nashville.php) to the election of a president. She’s a role model for philanthropists, and especially for women philanthropists. She’s shown the big boys that the big girls can raise the big bucks, and she makes it as much fun as whitewashing a fence. When the Association of Fundraising Professionals named her Philanthropist of the Year in 1999 we established the Susan Simons Scholarship. Each year, a development officer of a Middle Tennessee nonprofit receives an expense-paid trip to the national conference of the AFP. A big bang for the buck investment – these fundraising pros return to their jobs able to generate more revenue, able to think bigger for the rest of their fundraising lives.
